Ingredients
For the Gulab Jamun
- 1 cup cookwell’s Gulab Jamun mix
- 1/4 cup milk (or as needed)
- Oil or ghee for frying
For Sugar Syrup
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 cups water
- 4-5 cardamom pods, powdered
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- A few strands of saffron/kesar (optional)
Instructions
1. Making the Sugar Syrup
- Firstly, in a large pan, add 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of water and heat it on medium flame until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Once the sugar has dissolved, add the powdered cardamom, lemon juice, and a few strands of saffron (optional). These will add flavor to the syrup.
- Allow the syrup to boil for 5-7 minutes until it becomes slightly sticky. To test it, put a little bit of syrup between your fingers after it cools a bit and see if it feels sticky. The syrup should not reach a thread consistency.
- Turn off the heat. The sugar syrup is ready. Set aside and keep it warm.
2. Prepare the Gulab Jamun Dough
- In a mixing bowl, take 1 cup of Cookwell’s Gulab Jamun mix.
- Gradually add milk, a little at a time, and gently mix to form soft and smooth dough. The dough should not be too dry or too sticky.
- Let the dough rest for about 5 minutes.
3. Shape the Gulab Jamuns
- Divide the dough into small equal portions.
- Grease your hands with a little ghee or oil and roll each portion into small, smooth balls. Make sure there are no cracks in the balls.
4. Fry the Gulab Jamuns
- Heat the oil or ghee in a deep frying pan on medium heat. The oil should be moderately hot but not smoking.
- When the ghee/oil is moderately hot, gently slide the dough balls into the hot oil and fry the jamuns.
- Fry the balls on medium-low flame, gently stirring in between, until they turn golden brown from all sides.
- Remove the fried Gulab Jamuns with a slotted spoon and drain excess oil on paper towels.
5. Soak in Sugar Syrup
- Drop the hot jamuns into the hot sugar syrup.
- Let them soak in the sugar syrup for at least 1-2 hours to absorb the syrup and become soft and juicy.
6. Serve
- The gulab jamuns would have doubled in size. Serve them warm or at room temperature with ice cream or garnished with chopped nuts.
